New Discoveries

Brigitte Bardot and Serge Gainsbourg - Bonnie and Clyde (1968)
Bonnie and Clyde
1960s Discovery of Q3 2010

I heard this at Revolver Records on my birthday and was immediately impressed and intrigued. It's all in French, except for a few key words, and it's great. It really makes me want to find more music from the 60's that isn't on, say, Rolling Stone's top 500 album list.

Really though, listen to this track, it's awesome

♫: Bonnie and Clyde

Brian Eno - Another Green World (1975)
Another Green World
1970s Discovery of Q3 2010

Brian Eno's a legendary producer who has worked with Bowie, David Byrne, Devo, and Coldplay, and I've always been impressed with his work. It took me a while to finally get around to listening to his solo stuff, and it really is amazing. Another Green World feels so ahead of its time...certainly not like anything else in 1975. Its eclectic mix of guitar and electronic noises would honestly sound much more at home in the last 10 years.

♫: Sombre Reptiles

Public Image Ltd. - Album/Compact Disc/Casette (1986)
Album Compact Disc Casette
1980s Discovery of Q3 2010

PiL's performance at Coachella has stuck with me quite strongly, so naturally I've spent more time listening to them. They played several songs off of this cleverly named album that may or may not have ripped off a Flipper album (I'm leaning towards no, but who knows). PiL has always been in my life thanks to my dad, but they have taken a very long to really grow on me, I think because Rotten's voice is such an odd sound to hear over highly produced music. To be totally honest, I think they'd sound better with a producer like Steve Albini, who does a great job at capturing the natural live sound of a band.

Of course PiL was pretty much the first band that I know of to attempt to take punk music into a different direction, which is awesome.

♫: Rise

Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger (1991)
1990s Discovery of Q3 2010

No, I wasn't living under a rock in the 90's - I'm pretty sure I'd heard Badmotorfinger at some point growing up, but I really was more of a Superunknown kind of dude. It wasn't until recently that I was watching every single episode of Beavis & Butthead (with videos!) and some older Soundgarden caught my ear - particularly Rusty Cage, which is a great song. As much hate as early to mid 90's grunge gets, Soundgarden seems to be universally respected, and it's pretty clear why on this one.

♫: Rusty Cage

Ricardo Villalobos - Alcachofa (2003)
2000s Discovery of Q3 2010

The 00's have a lot of electronic that I love, and this one has been added to that list.

Burial - Untrue (2010)

More great electronic shit. I love this album's feel.

♫: Archangel

Darwin Deez - Darwin Deez (2010)

Love this. Might be my favorite of the year so far. Sounds a bit like the Strokes.

♫: Radar Detector

Big Boi - Sir Luscious Left Foot (2010)
Sir Luscious Left Foot

Got to show love for Big Boi. I only hope Andre retaliates.

♫: Shutterbug

Best Coat - Crazy For You (2010)
Crazy For You

I was pretty underwhelmed when I first heard this one, which seems to be one of the leading albums in indie's recent obsession with California's beaches. It's obviously become very addictive for me. Sounds like the Vivian Girls, but more in tune.

♫: When I'm With You

Also real quick because this entry is taking me forever - Ariel Pink's Round and Round is an amazing song; I've recently become re-obsessed with The Who's Sell Out, probably my favorite Who album; LCD Soundsystem and Arcade Fire's recent albums are growing on me, but still just don't hold a candle to their greater albums.

That's it!
